Basalt

Basalt belongs to basic volcanic rocks. It is also the main composition of earth's continental and oceanic crust and lunar highland and lunar mare. Basalt is a kind of basic extrusive rock and its chemical composition is similar to gabbros. Its SiO2 content varies  between 45% ~ 52% and its K2O + Na2O content  is slightly higher  than intrusive rocks, and  its CaO、Fe2O3+FeO、MgO content slightly lower than that .Its mineral composition is mainly basic feldspar and pyroxene, and its secondary mineral are olivine Peridot, hornblende and biotite, etc. Rocks are dark, generally black, sometimes grey green and dark purple and they have porphyritic structure. Pore structure and amygdaloidal structure are widespread. Basalt volume density is 2.8 ~ 3.3 g/cm3. Compression strength is very large in dense regions, up to 300 mpa and sometimes higher, and decreases if there are vitreous and porosity. Basalt has high durability and more joints. Its joint plane is mainly hexagon and brittle so it is not easy to pick large piece of stone. Due to the common porosity and almond construct although basalt are widely distributed on the earth's surface they are few used as facing stone.

Basalt is also the best materials to be used to repair the road, railway, airport runway among all kinds of the stones, with strong resistance to pressure, low crush value, strong corrosion resistance, asphalt adhesion, wear-resistant property, less water draft, poor conductive performance, and so on , and is recognized by the international community . It is the best foundation of development of railway transport and highway transport and it is also the good material in the manufacture of the "cast stone", which is the material after basalt being through melting casting, crystallization, annealing processing. It is harder and more wear resistant than steel alloy, and has more corrosion resistance than lead and rubber. It still plays the role of "lubricant" in steel casting advanced process and can extend the life of the cast film. At the same time, the basalt can also draw into glass fibers, with stronger alkali resistance than ordinary glass cloth and good in high temperature resistance. Basalt with many pores is also known as the pumice. Due to much porosity, and its hardness, it can be mixed in concrete and make the concrete weigh less. Not only durable, but also having the features such as sound insulation, heat insulation, it is good aggregate of lightweight concrete of high building. Pumice is also good grinding material and can be used to grind metal and stone; it also can be used as filter, dryer, catalyst, etc in industry.
